You shouldn’t set hummingbird feeders next to your standard bird feeders. Hummingbirds are tiny and get nervous around other birds. They won’t come near a busy feeder, so make sure to give them their own space to eat.

Most people recommend keeping your hummingbird feeders at least 10 feet away from other bird feeders.

However, if you can give them more space, that’s better. Plus, a male hummingbird could claim the feeder for itself, so you need more than one in your yard.

Why Should Hummingbird Feeders Be Kept Away From Other Feeders?

You should give common hummingbirds as much space to have their own feeder as possible. You don’t want to put it too close to your other bird feeders.

Hummingbirds are afraid of larger birds. They won’t come around when they sense them.

Some birds even prey on hummingbirds because they’re so small. Orioles, Blue jays, and crows will attack hummingbirds, and they’re a species that’s attracted to seed hummingbird feeders.

Plus, hummingbirds are afraid of many things. They’ll fly away when they hear loud sounds, which larger birds can make.

Hummingbirds also won’t nest near areas with squirrels because they eat the bird’s eggs. Squirrels are attracted to seed bird feeders, so that’s another reason to give them as much space as you can.

Overall, there are many reasons why you want to keep your hummingbird feeders separate from your regular bird feeders. The hummingbirds in your area will feel much safer when you do.

Why Do I Need More Than One Hummingbird Feeder?

Hummingbirds are aggressive with other members of their species. It’s not uncommon for a male hummingbird to claim a hummingbird feeder. He’ll stop other birds from using it by flying into them repeatedly until they leave.

Offering multiple hummingbird feeders will allow more tiny birds to enjoy the nectar. Plus, with more food available, the hummingbirds are less likely to be as aggressive with each other.

However, you still need to place these additional nectar feeders at least 10 feet apart from one another. If they’re too close, the hummingbirds might fight with each other- it’s best to spread them out.

Additionally, hummingbirds eat a lot of nectar! Why not make your own? Multiple will visit a single feeder, quickly draining it.

Will Hummingbirds Eat From a Seed Bird Feeder?

Hummingbirds can’t eat seeds. Their beaks only allow them to drink nectar, so you won’t ever see one of them eating from a birdseed feeder.

If you do see them pecking at plants, it’s because they’re eating tiny bugs from them.

Also, hummingbirds have a speedy metabolism. Their bodies wouldn’t survive on seeds because of how long they take to find, digest, and eat. Nectar is a much better option for them overall.

They aren’t eating the seeds if you see hummingbirds around a seed bird feeder. Instead, the birds eat small insects that are also attracted to the seeds.

Hummingbirds and Window Feeders

An excellent way to keep your hummingbird feeders away from your standard bird feeders is to use a window feeder just for them.

These feeders stick to your window using suction cups, and you can easily replace the nectar when needed.

Plus, you’ll be able to view the birds right from your window! It’s best to set them up on windows on the second floor, facing your backyard. Those areas are quieter and better suited for skittish hummingbirds.

This location should also keep them away from other bird feeders that you have on the ground. Overall, it’s a great option that anyone can try.

Where to hang a Hummingbird Feeder

Where Can I Put a Hummingbird Feeder?

You want to put your hummingbird feeder somewhere that you can easily see it. The feeder should be visible but far away from other feeders.

You also want the feeder to be a bright, open space. Hummingbirds avoid feeders that are too close to shrubs because they’re afraid predators are lurking there.

You should place the feeder above flowers if you have a garden. The flowers will help attract the birds to your feeder. Without flowers, it can take a lot longer for the hummingbirds to find your feeder.

Finally, you want the hummingbird feeder to be at least five feet above the ground. If it’s lower than that, it could become a hunting ground for cats.

Keep It Out of Sight Of Other Feeders

You’ll need to consider where you want to place your hummingbird feeders carefully. The best idea is to keep it out of sight of the other bird feeders you have on your property.

You can place them around different sides of your home, giving them plenty of space. That way, the hummingbirds can feel safer eating from their feeder.

These tiny birds are timid and nervous, so they will avoid other birds as much as possible.

Like chickadees and finches, some other birds will also visit hummingbird feeders. These other birds will also scare away the hummingbirds.

However, placing multiple hummingbird feeders around your yard will keep the hummingbirds coming back.

Orioles can be a nuisance when you want to attract hummingbirds. They can drain a feeder and will attack the smaller birds! You can prevent them from seeking out the nectar if you place Oriole feeders far away.

Overall, where you place your hummingbird feeders is essential! You’ll want to make sure you can’t see the hummingbird feeder from the other bird feeders in your yard.

Can I Put a Hummingbird Feeder Too High?

You don’t need to worry that the feeder is too high- hummingbirds will still find it. As long as it’s not too high for you to reach for cleaning and refilling, it’s okay.

However, you want the feeder to be at least five to six feet off the ground. If you go too high, it won’t be convenient to handle anymore
